5 Vintage Estate Sale Treasures I Always Look For

One of the questions I hear most often is, "What should I be looking for at estate sales?"

While every sale is different, there are a handful of treasures I almost always keep an eye out for. These are the pieces that add warmth, character, and timeless beauty to a home. Better yet, they're often much more affordable than buying new.

Here are five things that almost always make their way onto my shopping list.

1. Ironstone & Transferware

If you've followed me for any length of time, you already know I have a soft spot for beautiful dishes.

White ironstone layers effortlessly into almost any decorating style, while blue-and-white transferware instantly adds classic European charm. I use them everywhere—not just in the dining room.

Stack them on open shelves, tuck them into bookcases, display them in hutches, or use platters beneath candles and seasonal arrangements.

Nested Bee Tip: Don't worry about having a matching set. Mixing patterns and sizes creates a collected look that's much more interesting.

2. Brass Candlesticks & Decorative Accents

Nothing warms up a room quite like aged brass.

Whether it's candlesticks, trays, urns, or small decorative objects, brass adds richness and history without feeling overly formal.

I especially love mixing brass with linen, wood, wicker, and fresh greenery.

Over time, the natural patina only makes these pieces more beautiful.

3. Original Artwork

Skip the mass-produced wall art whenever you can.

Estate sales are one of the best places to find original oil paintings, watercolors, charcoal sketches, and antique prints.

Even if the frame isn't perfect, the artwork itself can become a meaningful focal point in your home.

Landscape paintings, florals, botanicals, and still lifes never go out of style.

Nested Bee Tip: Sometimes I'm buying the frame as much as the artwork. Beautiful vintage frames can completely transform a room.

4. Wooden Furniture with Good Bones

Solid wood furniture is one of the greatest values you'll find at estate sales.

Look beyond the current finish or fabric. Ask yourself:

"Does this piece have beautiful lines?"

Quality craftsmanship can often be refreshed with paint, stain, new upholstery, or updated hardware.

Unlike much of today's furniture, these older pieces were built to last for generations.

5. Baskets, Crocks & Everyday Accessories

The little things often make the biggest impact.

I never pass up beautiful woven baskets, stoneware crocks, wooden bowls, vintage books, cutting boards, or pottery.

These pieces add texture and make a home feel lived in without creating clutter.

Some of my favorite decorating moments come from combining everyday objects in simple ways.

A basket filled with blankets.

A crock holding wooden spoons.

A stack of vintage books topped with a candle.

Sometimes it's the smallest details that make a house feel like home.
